The Mulligan Brothers – The Mulligan Brothers (Self-titled)
Release Date: June 4th, 2013
I love this album and I feel like they came out of nowhere. Well, at least this album did. This is the beauty of Discover Weekly on Spotify. The same thing can be said for that band Young Gun Silver Fox, which is best said loudly and with conviction. The Mulligan Brothers self-titled album came out in 2013, but I do see that they have 2 other releases, one just this year. I had listened to Via Portland, released in 2015, but hadn’t loved it as much as this first release. But you know what, let’s go ahead and add Via Portland to my queue and give it another shot.
From start to finish, The Mulligan Brothers delivers with songs that sound different from one another and deliver in different ways. Songs like Red Dress Lady, Kaleidoscope and Sensible Shoes get in your bones and give you some feelings that maybe, just maybe, you weren’t prepared to feel in that moment. Other songs, such as Cecilia, Lay Here and Too Soon to Say can and have been played on repeat. The lead singer’s voice is the main draw of the band, despite the folksy music that does create some warmth within. His voice shines and absolutely stands out, even amongst the harmonies that exist through the background singers.
I hope you enjoy the album. Might I suggest playing this in the morning, waking up with some coffee and the shades open, welcoming the sunrise over this southern twang of beauty. The violin paired with the picking of a subtle banjo acts as a unique base for the stand out-Alabamian voice, creating a calmness as the sun welcomes the new day.
