Colony House – When I Was Younger
Release Date: July 22nd, 2014
I will never send Recto Verso, but you should know that it should be sent again and again. I may learn French to understand just what the hell they are saying. But alas, I am sending you a different band. I am unsure how I came across this band, but all signs point to some Spotify radio station. Thankfully my ear caught whatever song came on. It is exhaustingly difficult to pick a favorite song on this album. That is not to say that the album is a 10, but every song hits in its own way. As you listen, I wonder if you will feel the same way. There are some songs that you can skip, but I have listened to this album an unhealthy amount to try and pick just a couple of songs to highlight, but I just can’t. And I won’t (Narrator: He will pick a few songs.). Because I have to listen to something else.
This is their first album and I am too excited to say that. I just saw that they have two other albums, so the “something else” that I will be listening to will be more Colony House. Again. And again. It is hard to ignore the first song Silhouettes, but other favorites, if I must, would be: Roll With the Punches, Keep On Keeping On, Caught Me By Surprise, Moving Forward, Lose Control. But again, that was difficult. All of the songs flow well together in this album and make me want to ignore my children and focus on the rest of the discography today.
The main takeaway from this band is their positivity. In each song, there seems to be an uplifting message. The lyrics can’t hide from me. Whether he is talking about overcoming something or dealing with setbacks, the track titles hammer it home that he went through something negative in his life and this album is his expression of his growth. It is a great listen as the songs differ from each other enough to keep your attention, while the music continues to get louder and louder for effect in some instances. His voice flawlessly rises above the steadily increasing volume of the band in what could be a nicely embedded metaphor for the message of the album or simply something that I have just created in my head to make me sound like I know what I am talking about.
Adam’s Reaction:
I have to admit that this album had me coming back to it, but in a much different way. I couldn’t get into it and I knew I would have to deliver an album of my own while commenting on Colony House. The positivity and sound are definitely the attributes that deserve celebration, but I still could not find myself digging them the way I thought I would. I had stumbled upon Silhouettes at some point through a Spotify deep dive, but never followed up on them and it is exciting to know they have two additional albums. There are obviously some great songs on here that you luckily exhausted yourself deciding upon and I would just like to add that the “hard rock” in 2:20 may be my favorite part of this entire listening experience.
